Assignments: OPPOSITES

1. What is something that is pulling you in opposite directions? What are some things, activities, people, choices for which you have opposite feelings? Do you have some intentions that are the opposite of your actions? Have you ever said something that was the opposite of what you felt? Do a page exploring these feelings or ideas. You can use opposite colors, opposite ends of the page, or graphics, such as magnets to help you express yourself.

Example: This journaler wrote her reasons for wanting more children inside the shape of a pregnant belly, and her reasons for wanting to wait longer in the blue around it.

2. Using a central idea, do two opposite pages about it. One idea is do use a white crayon on one side, drawing a picture or writing words, then painting with watercolors over the crayon. The paint will make the crayon visible. On the opposite page, paint the entire page with watercolors then cover the paint with a layer or two of black crayon. Use a paperclip to scratch the black away and reveal the paint in the shape of a picture or word. It could be a love/hate relationship, changing moods, or the good and bad of one aspect of you or your life.

3. Are what you show outside and what you feel inside opposite? Explore who you are in and out by cutting and pasting pictures which resemble your inside on a right-side page of your journal. When you are finished, fold the page in half, using the back-side of the page to represent your outside. Another way to do this project is to put how you’d like your life/house/heart to be on one side, and what it looks or feels like to you on the other. If you need more space, use 4 whole pages!

Example: This journaler made the outside of her page how she feels on the outside, or how she feels she is percieved. The page was folded. The inside was filled with images of how she would like to feel or would like to be.
